Mexican Birth Certificate Corrections for Clients in the United States
We handle cases involving errors, inconsistencies, or differences in a Mexican birth certificate, from reviewing the available documents to following up with the relevant authority.
Birth certificate corrections in Mexico apply to spelling mistakes, incorrect dates, inconsistencies in the parents’ names, or discrepancies against other official documents. Because each certificate is issued and corrected at the state level, the first step is always identifying the exact Civil Registry office where it was originally recorded, before starting any birth certificate corrections process remotely.
Birth certificate corrections: what type of errors we handle
Each case is analyzed individually to determine the applicable procedure.
Errors in first or last names
Differences between what the certificate says and the real name, misspelled or incomplete.
Differences in birth dates
Registered date different from the real one, or inconsistent with other official documents.
Errors in parents’ data
Parents’ names or details incorrectly captured in the registry.
Inconsistencies between documents
The certificate doesn’t match a passport, ID, visa, or other documents based on it.
Registry corrections or clarifications
Administrative adjustments to the record that require a formal procedure with the authority.

Mexican birth certificate corrections: common questions
Answers based on the real procedure before the Mexican Civil Registry.
Can I correct my certificate without traveling to Mexico?
In some states, such as Mexico City, the correction process can be started through an online Civil Registry platform, although the final resolution and certain steps may require legal representation in Mexico. We coordinate that representation for you.
How much does correcting a birth certificate cost?
Cost varies by state and type of correction. As a reference, in Mexico City the administrative procedure for correcting civil status records has an official cost of 780 Mexican pesos, in addition to our management fees.
What if I don’t know which Civil Registry issued the certificate?
Before starting any correction, you need to identify the exact Civil Registry office — municipality and state — where the original certificate was recorded, since each Mexican state operates its own registry independently. If you already have a case open, you can track it by folio through the National Civil Registry Platform; we handle that identification for you as a first step.
Once corrected, do I need to apostille the certificate for use in the U.S.?
If the U.S. institution requires the document apostilled, apostille of state-issued Mexican documents is handled at the state level, not federally — each Mexican state has its own apostille and legalization authority. As a cost and timing reference, in the state of Coahuila apostilling a state document has an official cost of 546 Mexican pesos and is resolved in 1 business day.
